How to make an Acai Bowl
Love Squad, it's freezing cold outside. Some of us could escape the cold New York City weather to the Caribbean’s, which is why we'll make you feel as if you’ve transported yourself to an island with this blog post today. Have you ever heard of Acai?
What is Acai?
The acai berry is a fruit harvested from acai palm trees, native to the rainforests of South America. Acai berries are packed with antioxidants, fiber, and heart-healthy fats. Widely called a superfruit because they may help with arthritis, weight loss, high cholesterol, skin appearance, detoxification, and general health.
Acai bowls are a tasty way to begin your day with a healthy breakfast, or as some quick fuel for the afternoon. We found the Sambazon acai berry packs at our local Whole Foods in the frozen aisle next to the frozen fruit. The Sambazon brand is made with all organic and GMO-free ingredients sustainably sourced in the Brazilian Amazon.
The fun part is picking the toppings. Pile on the strawberries, bananas, mango, kiwi, a drizzle of honey, a sprinkle of chia seeds or dried goji berries, spoonful of granola and shredded coconut. The options are nearly endless, and up to you! The base of an acai bowl is frozen acai berry puree, frozen bananas (adds a thicker consistency) and your choice of dairy.
1 pack frozen acai berry puree 1 frozen sliced banana 1 cup frozen strawberries 1/2 cup Almond Breeze Almondmilk Original (or milk of choice), plus more as needed 1/2 to 1 tablespoon honey, to taste Toppings: Favorite fresh fruit, sliced (pineapple, strawberries, kiwi, mango, ect) Clear, runny honey Granola (optional) Unsweetened coconut flakes (optional) Dried goji berries (optional) Chia or hemp seeds (optional)
Combine frozen banana, strawberries, almond milk, honey, and acai berry puree to a blender. Blend until creamy and smooth, adding extra almond milk as needed to get the blender running. Aim for a frozen-yogurt consistency (it should be thicker than a smoothie). Spoon the acai mixture into bowls (or pineapple bowl) and top with sliced fruit, a drizzle of honey, and the optional toppings (if using). Notes
You can buy acai packs in the frozen fruit section of many grocery stores. Look for frozen pulp, not the powder, to use in smoothie bowls.
