MEET & LOVE: Kiran Gandhi
Kiran Gandhi, known by her stage name Madame Gandhi, is an electronic music artist, singer, and activist based in Los Angeles. Having gained recognition as the former drummer for M.I.A. and as the iconic free-bleeding runner at the 2015 London Marathon, Madame Gandhi now works with sound designer Alexia Riner to create art that elevates and celebrates the female voice. Our founder Ally Love had the chance to meet Madame Gandhi at the Adidas Ultra Boost Event in San Francisco a few weeks ago:
"She is inspiring. Not only is Madame Gandhi an athlete, she is an artist who uses her talents as a platform to speak out about equality, and feminism. She's a rockstar! "
Q&A's with Kiran Gandhi
WHEN YOU’RE TIRED AND CANNOT PUSH ANY FURTHER, WHAT DO YOU TELL YOURSELF?
If it’s in a work out setting, I always do countdowns of 10 seconds, because I am always able to get through tough work outs when I break them down and there is a clear interval where I have to push. I then keep adding on these 10 second intervals and build my own confidence up by realizing I’m always able to push harder and go longer than I think I can. If it is a situation with work or life, I apply a similar approach, which is to just choose one last task. Can I send that one last email, do that one last job? Usually once I’ve completed that one job, I feel motivated again and am able to go through more work than I thought. Finally, I’ll add that I am very forgiving with myself. On the days I really need a moment, I allow myself to take it because I feel like I am working all the time.
When you wholeheartedly, unconditionally want the best for someone else. It is caring that they are their best and happiest selves. It is contributing whatever you can to their lives that would make it better, from their perspective.

THE MOMENT YOU KNEW YOU WANTED TO START FITNESS?
I had moved from LA to Boston to attend Harvard Business School. I remember always feeling cold throughout my first year, but by the time the second year rolled around I was more proactive and decided to look around at how local Bostonians dealt with the cold intelligently. One thing that struck me is that they are always out running! Running in the wind, snow, rain, hail…you name it! I was drawn to the power in this, the ability to be fierce and motivated and actually stay warm and comfortable in what would seem to be the most uncomfortable situation.
That’s when I started running on the Charles River several times a week. I could barely run a mile. After a year of running I was able to run the London Marathon. The main attraction to running for me as a musician and creative is that I am able to tap into meditative head spaces that I am rarely able to tap in to in any other setting. I start having future visions and thinking deeply about ideas I have for my live show, lyrics for songs I want to write, or ways of using my music and words further to elevate and celebrate the female voice. Because I access my favorite thoughts through running, it makes it easy to want to run several times a week.
COFFEE OR TEA?

MY FAVORITE COUNTRY IS:
IF YOU COULD BE ANYTHING IN THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I love drummers who are really tight with their rudiments and speedy around the kit. While I have some rudiments and levels of speed down that I’m really proud of (especially needed when I was on the MIA tour!), my style is definitely more focused on self-expression and having a voice on the kit. So I answer this question by saying that I want to be a better, tighter, quicker drummer!
WHAT’S IN YOUR BAG RIGHT NOW?
The blank sample shirts we are printing on for the new March 2017 tour Madame Gandhi “Own Your Voice” shirts!!!!
YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE...
“Imagine if we lived in a world in which we are linked and not ranked.” - Gloria Steinem. To me, this means, “Imagine if we lived in a future that is female”, and I say this in my song “The Future is Female”, which you can find here!
