Q&A with Alex Silver-Fagan
#What's in your bag right now?
Deodorant, strawberry orbit gum, an RX bar, an extra pair of clothes!
#Fun facts about you?
I always have multiple packs of gum on me. I eat a banana every day. I grew up riding horses.
#What's the story behind "Flow into strong”
I realized that my yoga practice played a positive role in my strength training and I wanted to share that with others. One of the biggest problems I see in the fitness industry is the need to take multiple classes in a day and never truly connect to your body. So many people overload themselves with exercise but aren’t mindful in any of their movements. Thus, nothing is effective. With Flow Into Strong, I take you through intervals of yoga and strength training all with the goal of staying mindful and connected to your breath/body throughout the class. This way, the hour is more beneficial.
#From bodybuilding to Yoga. How did that happen?
Everything has just been a very gradual progression. I started my journey into fitness with bikini competitions because I was under the impression that it was a “healthy lifestyle” based off of what I saw on Instagram. After 3 competitions, I decided to shift my focus to more functional training and performance based goals. I was grateful for all of the lessons I learned from bodybuilding and the discipline I was able to practice, but didn’t feel like I was truly living a healthy lifestyle. Meanwhile, yoga has always been in the background for me. It’s always been my hobby and my escape. As my career and my own personal development within fitness has progressed, yoga just seemed like a natural addition. Everything is movement, regardless of the type.
#What you ever taken a break from life?
I have taken a mini break from “typical" life. In November of 2016, I decided to go to Thailand to get my yoga certification. It was amazing to disconnect, see the world, and made me really appreciate my life back in NY.
#What made you become a nike trainer?
In March of 2015, the head of training for Nike was scouting new trainers and had heard my name. She came into one of my classes one day and then invited me to audition.
#What is your favorite quote
An arrow can only be shot forward by being pulled backwards so when life is pulling you back with difficulties, it means it’s going to launch you into something greater.
